Purple Hues- 2 An Interview with Simran Arora

1- Tell us something about yourself. Describe yourself in three words.

I am Simran Arora, a 17 years old Indian poet. My poems have been published in 'MELANGE' alongside Ruskin Bond, Vikram Seth, and other acclaimed Indian poets; Hindustan Times; Hans India - Hyderabad's Sunday Magazine; Different Truths- an online web magazine amongst other online portals. I have also received Poises Award for Poetic Excellence for the year 2016 for securing the 5th position in the 5th Rabindranath Tagore International Award. I have also won 'Conquering Self-Doubt' - Poetry Contest which was a part of ‘The Quest for Empowerment’ event as well as the Poetry Prize of India by the World Union of Poets.

Three words that would describe me will be: Diligent, Confident, Jovial

2- Tell us about your Poem ? How did you get the idea for it? What is it about?

The first poem 'Mother's Caress' was written a few years ago on my mother's birthday recalling the solace found in her lap and how it can transport me to happy places only in a few minutes. The second poem 'O'Mother' and the third poem 'O'Father' were penned down recently aiming to capture the unconditional love bestowed upon us by our parents. It was a sincere effort to reflect what my parents mean to me.

3- Tell us about your Relationship with your Parents ? Share an incident from your Life where you felt deep gratitude towards your family .

Teenage often brings conflicts between parents and children but it wasn't so in my case. In fact, my parents have been my best and most trustable friends for the longest time. Being my best critics and strongest supporters, they have always tried to help in every way possible. There have been many incidents when I have felt a sense of deep gratitude towards them. In fact, every morn when they wake up and go to work, I feel immensely blessed and thankful to them for toiling so hard to make our dreams become reality.

4- Tell us about your journey as a Writer.

I still remember writing my first poem 'My pet' for a school's activity at a tender age of 10. After which I straight away wrote in 8th standard, on being bored in my class, about the Summery days followed by Wintery blues and soon all the seasons found a place in my diary. Soon after, my passion for giving my thoughts life grew and I began keeping poetry notebooks which in no time became a collection of more than 500 poems. Of course, not all those poems were worthy but penning them down was definitely therapeutic. Throughout this time, my school's magazine and Hindustan Times newspaper featured my poetry and reports, that I wrote as the NIE Times Of India Official Reporter of the school for two years. It was in 2015 that one of my poems found its way onto the page of a prestigious anthology in which I shared space with Ruskin Bond Sir, Vikram Seth Sir, and others. Getting this opportunity at the age of 16 was exhilarating for me. I also recently received Poises Award for Poetic Excellence and got published in a few online magazines amongst other things.

5- What do you do when you are not writing?

Well, besides writing, I enjoy reading books.

6- Who are your favorite authors/ writers?

Some of my favorite poets are Tagore, Rumi, Lang Laev, Neruda, and Gulzar. I am presently also liking the style of poetry writing of Nayyirah Waheed and Tyler Knott Gregson.

7- How do you see Yourself five years down the line ? What will you be working on next?

I see myself working on my Solo Book in the next few years.

8- How was experience with Sanmati Publishers?

This has been my first experience with them and by far, it has been quite satisfactory. Special mention to the editor Nikita Goel for selecting my work.

9- What would be your message for our readers?

Read a lot especially the work in the field of your genre. But never try to duplicate another author. Find your individualistic style and nurture it.

10- Would you like to share few lines from your Poetry at Purple Hues-2

O'mom,
Your gestures of affection,
Have made me grow into who I am;

Oh my sun, oh my moon,
To be born as a daughter to you,

Is a true blessing, a boon.
